What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which your blood glucose or sugar levels are high or too high. There are two types of diabetes and classified as Type I diabetes and Type 2 diabetes, depending on dependency of medicine.

Introduction

In our body metabolism, to give energy Insulin hormone and Glucose from the foods must balance. In Type 1 diabetes body fails to make insulin. In Type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin well and without enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood itself.
So, in both cases, having too much glucose in blood can cause serious problems and may damage sensitive organs such as kidneys, eyes, nerves.
Diabetes can also cause serious problems related to heart such as stroke, hyperlipidaemia and even with complications such as amputation in diabetic food or wound.
If a pregnant woman gets diabetes incidentally, it is called as gestational diabetes and is treated accordingly and regular monitoring is recommended thereafter.

Hereditary diabetes

Diabetes may run in families and may appear at any age and proper care should be taken and if there is a family history, one should have regular check-ups with physician regarding the same. This has been explained in ayurveda with respect with lifestyle, if there is sedentary lifestyle, chances of getting diabetes is higher.

Symptoms of diabetes

Symptoms of Type 2 diabetes: Thirst, weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision and frequent urination and the Symptoms of high blood sugar or Hyperglycaemia may include: Being thirsty, Having blurry vision, Dry skin, Feeling weak and tired, Increased frequency of urination. Other problems like sexual dysfunction in both men and women, Weakness or loss of strength.

Diabetes Complications

One must be cautious to control diabetes to avoid complications or risk factors such as Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), Heart problems, Eye problems, Neuropathy or Blindness, kidney problems etc.

Managing diabetes

Managing diabetes is very important and after analysing many factors one can assess the treatment and following diet and lifestyle will have equal importance by controlling weight, Exercise, perfect diet plan are indicated.
The goal of treatment is to control sugar levels along with physical exercise. In allopath or modern medicine, there are medications to control sugar levels which is very important with time. Other system of medicines like ayurveda, siddha, or homeopathy, or unani focus on healthy lifestyle and protecting health is also a main and major concern.

Alternative therapies

Including Ayurveda, there are many systems do treat diabetes or help to prevent or control diabetes which is important task. As ayurveda focuses on prevention and control, we do recommend avoiding the causative factors like overweight, or reducing weight, avoiding excess or too much sugar intake, sedentary lifestyle etc.
Other alternative therapies like yoga and naturopathy, acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, color therapy, Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine and many other types of health system do suggest their own method to control diabetes.

Diabetes according to Ayurveda

Ayurveda says diabetes as Prameha or Madhmeha depending on symptoms like excess urination or urination with sweet odour.
Ayurveda strictly says to avoid the aetiology of disease and if there is disease, the science of ayurveda explained to control it.
There are many herbal preparations which are found effective to control diabetes and related complications which can be used on monitored basis.

Natural Home Remedies for Diabetes

  • Bay leaf powder (Tej patti)1/4tsp and turmeric (1/2 tsp each) in 1 tablespoon Aloevera gel. This mixture can be taken twice half an hour before breakfast and before dinner.
  • Fresh Jamoon leaves to be boiled and that boiled water along with mango leaves to be kept overnight and filtered. That liquid has to be consumed in early morning empty stomach.
  • Bitter gourd juice is also helpful.
  • Curry leaves in any form is good for controlling diabetes.
  • Cinnamon boiled in water is also useful for diabetes control or consuming one/two pinches with warm water is also effective.
  • Amalaki or Amla, turmeric, and fenugreek powders should be mixed in equal quantities and 1 tsp should be consumed once daily with honey.
  • Bael leaves (Aegle marmelos), Consuming garlic, Indian plum (jamun), and onions are also very helpful.
  • Almonds soaked in milk to be consumed is good for diabetic related weakness.
  • Tulasi leaves, neem leaves, beal leaves should be taken in equal quantities should be boiled in water and filtered, this liquid decoction can be consumed dialy.
  • Soybean, Black grape juice, Mango and Indian plum juice in moderate quantities are helpful to control or prevent diabetes.

Ayurvedic medicines for diabetes

There are many formulations for managing diabetes and few examples are Abhrak bhasma , Anandbhairav rasa, VasanthKusumakar Rasa, Aragvadhadi kvath churna, Chandraprabha Vati, Divya Madhunashini Vati.
Divya Madhu Kalp Vati, Avipatikar churna, Ayaskriti, Babbularista, Brihat guduchi taila, Brihat purnachandra rasa, Karela, Madhumehari Granules, Brihat vangeshvara rasa, Chaturmukh rasa, Chandanadi churna, Chaturbhuj rasa, Devadarvarishta, Dhanvantara ghrita, Gokshuradi guggulu, Grahanimihir taila , Hemanantha rasa, Kaishore guggulu, Kumaryasava, Kamdhenu rasa, Lakshmivilasa rasa, Loha bhasma, Madhukasava, Madhusnuhi rasayana, Maha lakshmivilas rasa, Maha yogaraj guggulu, Mehamudgar rasa, Mutrasangrahniya kashay churna, Navayas churna, Nyagrodhadi churna, etc are the medicines which are used in the form of formulations and depending on the symptoms of the disease.
